1. The Big Idea

An inspiring figure or leaders introduce a new and transcendent idea offering a solution for struggling players.

Thus we find ourselves. They’re getting ready to confront the system overseas. Pressure is mounting. Conflict emerges from the sidelines. A lone figure, vulnerable, shivering, the words HIGH RELEASE POINT displayed prominently in chicken blood, has emerged into view and is being led away with discretion for a temporary assignment at Derbyshire.

Do you ever miss the early days, when optimism reigned? The era of early Bazball, of Bazball without brains.

2. The Honeymoon Phase

Team architects offer a reboot, a brighter tomorrow, love, success together who all believe in the big idea.

What did it represent back then? Players celebrating feeling good. Tattoos. Forearms. Focus. Confident masculinity. Oh sure, England’s players insist Bazball doesn’t actually exist, amusingly since it’s not recognized, what was that spectacle?

However, everyone understands what it is. It’s the player executing a stroke so depraved it’s beyond belief. It’s the adrenaline of the leader in ultimate mode, a demeanor suggesting: thoughtful warrior, rugged appearance, hair woven from beaver hide, genuinely raw you almost imagine to look down and find him positioned on the ground stripped to the waist embracing nature.

It’s the opener often seen to talk in press conferences, resembling a cheerful animal smartly dressed, expressing thoughts like we are actively deconstructing the orange. Indeed, the energy, for a significant period, was uplifting.

3. The Growth Phase

Growth phase. Togetherness strengthened via memorization of key phrases. These principles are often illogical to prove commitment.

Am I alone? The criticism, the anger, the sense of betrayal following the initial loss seems too strong, too much. The batting collapsed on the field, as history shows. They were torn apart while bowling in a short span when tactics failed, carved around by Travis Head batting like England but better, responsive to the situation, a performer excelling with a kind of light around him.

And now we have this the criticism, the anger, the sense of English Test cricket as a failure. The consensus is that defeat must be total, they need to lose righteously, to be scoured, obliterated, defeated through sheer skill of the bowler’s action, the conventional tactics of the bowler, marking successes humbly as if receiving a pleasant gift. How will they respond?

4. External Conflict

Issues emerge from failures in the plan. Yet, mistakes are denied. It turns to hatred of the outside world.

In truth, half a week out from the second Test, we are at a critical juncture in the story of this approach. England could quite easily win in the next Test with bold tactics. Alternatively, they could lose just as quickly. In case of defeat it appears we could be witnessing the decline.

Before that happens, a couple of points to note about this. Previously, back in those heady early days, of light and heat, I wrote an article calling it a phenomenon. There was outrage, which demonstrated because everyone knows the best way of proving that it’s not a closed group is when its acolytes respond with anger denying scrutiny of the beliefs.

What has happened in the last few days is just as interesting. It seems that hating Bazball has turned into a movement. We have a uniformly angry internet, angry English pundits, pictures of upset followers overseas disappointed by the short match, like a room full of people wanting fairness.

Meanwhile, we have the wider backdrop of Australia’s more nuanced ingrained annoyance with the aggressive tourists, claiming, hey, that thing you love and have developed as one way of separating yourself from the opposition, it’s not serious after all.

Here lies the truth. All movements are similar. The approach was a phenomenon as the game has its own culture. Or at least, English cricket has always been a cult, a group, a garden party, a restricted environment with two hundred years of tradition and mystery behind it. It has long been where influence is guarded. It’s the British pastime of the nation, the pioneering brand. And surprisingly, the nation has its own culture, a system of unknown levels, a place that literally still has a king.

The players have been isolated within this world for years. Attempting to break free, to foster positivity, they are simply replicating their own experience, forming a new circle, a closed circle, however with a modern squad and a leader encouraging individuality if you fit the mold.

Focus on the moment. Run towards the danger. However much you change, you’re always basically in the same place.
